Located in the southern part of Oita Prefecture, Tsukumi City includes “Nippo Kaigan Quasi-National Park” and presents visitors with a unique natural contrast between its deeply indented ria coastline and the “mikan” (mandarin orange) terraced fields. Besides the top-quality produce coming from the mountain sides, among which the mikan certainly stand out with a variety of kinds and high quality, its sea is brimming with cultivated tuna. Since there is a base of tuna fishing here, the city has a lot of restaurants serving tuna dishes. “Hyuga-don” is a dish in which slices of tuna are marinated in sesame oil sauce and then served on a bed of rice. It is one of the representative food of the city and supposedly was created to offer fishermen a quick, tasty and nutritious meal so they could face the adversities of open-sea fishing. Its sesame flavor stimulates your appetite.
Besides food, Tsukumi City is also famous for its “Umitama Experience Park” featuring “Tsukumi Dolphin Island”, where you can swim and play with dolphins, as well as for the early blooming Kawazu-zakura cherry trees. About 4,600 trees are in full bloom in February, creating some fantastic landscapes.
